Grain Surfboards

Location: York, ME
Space: Grain Surfboards
September 2011

On our recent trip around the Northeast, we were pleasantly surprised to have the opportunity to tour the Grain Surfboards' workshop in beautiful York, Maine. Grain began several years ago in a basement, started by founder Mike LaVecchia, a board-sports enthusiast with a passion for traditional wooden boat-building. Every board is hand-built from local white cedar by a skilled team who labor together in a cooperative space where hard work and fun intermingle to create an inviting atmosphere. On the day we arrived, the team was preparing for the Surf Re-Evolution event, featuring films, artwork and a bonfire. The event is appropriately named, with Grain reaching back in the history of surfing, where boards were carefully shaped solid pieces of wood, hand-shaped from logs. Being in the space felt like we'd arrived in a much cooler version of Santa's workshop. Seeing the insides of these skillfully made boards, gave us a greater appreciation for the work this crew is doing. We are very happy to bring you a behind the scenes look at the space where all the magic happens.
